Can there be a more perfect way to start your Christmas celebrations than a trip to see a Christmas show? And there is no need to leave town!

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse,
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there…

…But it’s the busiest night of the year and things have gone a bit awry; a dreaded illness is spreading across the globe threatening to wipe out Christmas altogether. St Nicholas is missing and the world will soon wake up and ask why there are no presents in their stockings. Is there a child who has the courage to help and the strength to believe?

Bradford on Avon ‘Working Tree’ Lights Up

Bradford on Avon will have a special Christmas Spirit this year with an array of more than forty Christmas globes scattered throughout the town and a light extravaganza to achieve the most majestic Christmas season in the town’s history.

One of the three Christmas Trees in the Town Centre will be located at Lamb Yard and will be designated as a ‘working tree in a historic working town’ following an idea proposed by resident and teacher Christopher Curtis.  A fifteen foot Nordic Tree will adorn Lamb Yard area of Bradford on Avon Town Centre next to Budgens and will symbolise the spirit of giving at Christmas time.  Two local charities have been chosen by Bradford on Avon Town Council to support this project – Bath Cats and Dogs Home and Dorothy House Hospice Care based in Winsley.

Local residents are welcome to donate tins of dog and cat food to the Bath Cats and Dogs home in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Day and these will be regularly delivered to the BCDH by Chris and his team.
Dog and Cat food can be placed to the left of the tree in a safe deposit area underneath the tree.

People can also donate small gifts to Dorothy House that are ‘hamper size’ and can be used by the Team at Dorothy House to auction at a later date or to give directly to residents.   These gifts will be collected on a daily basis from a safe box to the right of the tree and delivered direct to Dorothy House.  Chris said “We wanted Bradford on Avon to celebrate Christmas with a sparkling spirit this year and having a working tree with easy parking nearby as a drop off point for residents adds a new dimension to the towns’ celebration of Christmas”.

The Christmas tree will be decorated by Glass Artist Alex Compton working with students from St. Laurence School, Bradford on Avon. Students from Frome College will also help with making signs for the two large collection points underneath the tree.

Stephanie Cox, Community Fundraiser for Dorothy House Hospice Care in Winsley, Bradford on Avon said:

“Dorothy House is proud to be part of this local community.  The generosity and support of the people of Bradford on Avon over the years has and continues to be inspiring.  We are thrilled to have been chosen as one of the charities to benefit in this innovative Christmas display.  Every donation we receive makes a difference to people’s lives.  These gifts mean a great deal to the patients and families we look after every year who benefit from our nursing, counselling, complementary therapies, group activities and much more.  At Dorothy House, our aim is to provide the best possible level of care for all our patients, and to give that care where people want it most.  While many of our core services are based at the hospice in Winsley, the majority of our work is provided out in the community, much of it in patients’ homes.   All our services are provided free of charge and are only possible with the generous support of the community”.

Zena Jones, Community Fundraising Manager at the Bath Cats and Dogs home said:

“Christmas is always a busy time for the Home and this year we will be caring for over 200 animals on site.  We are thrilled to have been chosen as the recipients for these fantastic donations and the food donated will make a huge difference to us over the cold winter months when our food bill is at our highest.  We think this is a great community initiative and are looking forward to being part of it”.
